Food Safety in Catering CIEH Level 2 – 21st November or 23rd March
This course is for anyone working in a catering or hospitality setting where food is prepared, cooked and served. It aims to raise awareness and understanding of food hygiene issues and will enable learners to fulfil their obligations under food hygiene regulations. Each delegate will receive comprehensive notes to take away with them. This one day course leads to the nationally recognised Certificate and culminates in a short multiple choice exam
Emergency First Aid at Work – 10th November or 25th February
Recommended by Health & Safety Executive, this is a minimum level of first aid training for the workplace, appropriate for low-risk environments or in addition to
fully trained first aiders. On completion, candidates become your appointed persons who take charge when someone is injured or falls ill, including calling an ambulance if required.
Managing Conflict – 28th October or 5th February
It is never nice being involved in situations of confrontation or conflict, but depending on what role you undertake at work sometimes it is inevitable. Whether you are dealing directly with a member of the public, an angry and potentially violent customer or a person who is posing a physical threat to you, this course helps you understand how to deal with these situations and allow you to stay safe, deescalate the situation and take control and where necessary use physical force.

How Can Social Media Help My Business? – 24th October or 10th February
Everyone is talking about it, now’s the time to get to grips with social media. This course introduces and assesses the relevance of online PR and social media, so that you can start to plan and develop an online strategy for your own business, brand & customer. By the end of the course you will be able to know how to map your online audiences and reputation, be able to identify and evaluate social media opportunities and threats and even participate in networks through “social objects”. “social currency” and “conversationalists”.
On Line Selling – 5th November or 10th February
Every day millions of items are traded on line with an estimated 1.3 million people now making part of their living through on line selling. This enlightening course lets you explore selling your own products or services through a website. Running an on line store makes It easy for you to list a lot of items very cost effectively and to reach an impressively wide audience, transforming your current local customer base and raising your enterprise onto a regional or even international stage. You will also gain some helpful advice and tips to ensure that you maximise the potential of this ever growing sales channel.
Managing a Website- 27th October or 18th February
More and more businesses are becoming reliant on their website to support business growth but setting up a website is just the start. This course will give you a feel of how you can maximise the potential of your website by keeping it up to date and ensuring it is easily navigable by the different people accessing it.
BUSINESS SUPPORT COURSES
A Practical Introduction to SAGE Accounting – 6th February
This course is intended as a very basic introduction to this popular software package that enables you to carry out every day operational aspects of computerised accounts. The one day course will introduce you to topics such as processing accounting transactions, producing customer and supplier documentation and producing reports such as aged creditor analysis and sales day book summaries for management purposes.
Take the taster course and if you feel your business will benefit, then continue onto our 10 week x 3 hour course starting in November or March to achieve a level 2 award in Computerised accounts
Team Leading - 27th October or 4th February
This course is specially designed for those who find themselves appointed or promoted into a team leader position where they are required to supervise and lead staff. Ideal whether you are newly appointed or experienced in leadership, this course mixes theory with practical advice and provides candidates with the skills and confidence to lead effectively.
Candidates who wish to undertake the EDI Level 2 Certificate may do so by completing a second half day revision session and multi-choice test at a later date.
Customer Service – 4th November or 3rd March
We all know that providing excellence in customer service can reap rewards for any business but for some people that skills needs to be developed. Join this one day course to find out how you can improve the relationship with your customers.
Candidates who wish to gain a qualification in customer service can attend a second day or take an on-line course designed by Kendal College.
Introduction to Excel for Business – 3rd November or 2nd February
During this introductory course you will learn what a spreadsheet is and what types of information can be stored in a spreadsheet. How to create a spreadsheet, inserting formulas to perform calculations and applying formatting to improve the appearance of your spreadsheet. Whilst you should have some prior experience in using computers, no knowledge of Excel is assumed.
If knowledge of spreadsheets will help your business, you can progress onto further one day courses to develop your skills. Courses run throughout the year.
Maximising Excel for Your Business – 17th November or 11th February
Designed for those who understand the basics of Microsoft Excel but would like to know more about how the functions of this powerful software can be used to support your business planning.
Basic Photography for Business – 11th November or 10th February
Led by a professional photographer, you will learn about some basic principles of photography, such as exposure and composition of an image together with the equipment that you need (and what you don’t) plus get to grips with the basic camera controls.
Post production will also be covered and should you decide that you need a professional photographer after all, what the pitfalls are and how to choose one that is right for you. This course makes a perfect accompaniment to our On Line Selling course.
Visual Merchandising and Window Dressing – 4th November or 24th February
A very practical course with hints and tips that will help you see both your shop front and your shop interiors with fresh eyes. The course will introduce you to some of the tried and tested principles that retail professionals rely upon, you will gain an understanding of the impact that different styles and arrangements can make to the profitability of your business.
Some simple changes can not only draw those valuable potential customers, across your threshold, they can turn idle window shopping into valuable and repeat sales
Course Costs – all the courses listed are free to your business and funded through Penrith BID or Cumbria EDGE funding
Each course runs over one full day, from 9.30 am to 4 pm at a venue in Penrith town centre.
