Welcome to Discover Penrith, and the first-ever blog entry! You can probably detect a tone of elation in that sentence. I have arguably more reason than most to celebrate the happy arrival of this website, having guided it into life on behalf of Penrith Business Improvement District.
Whether you’re a visitor thinking of coming to Penrith, a local resident, or a business owner considering locating here, I hope Discover Penrith leaves you with a sense of a great place to live, work, enjoy and visit.
What I also hope Discover Penrith shows is that we’re a town with ambition. In April 2013, 402 business and organisations in the centre of town formed the Penrith Business Improvement District (BID) and set out together on a journey to make this a vibrant and attractive area, for the benefit of local people, visitors, shoppers and businesses. Crucially, Penrith BID is funded by its members and so has the resources to really make things happen – such as this website!
Discover Penrith is the first website dedicated to showing off just how much Penrith has to offer for visitors and the local community alike – and we’ve got a lot to shout about. We’re in a superb location, just a few minutes off the M6, in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, sandwiched between the Lake District National Park and the Pennines. We’ve got all the leisure facilities, shops, accommodation, services and entertainments you’d expect from a bustling market town, but with important distinctions: individuality and character.
Visiting Penrith means exploring our cobbled streets and lanes, and enjoying our treasure trove of independent shops along with the familiar high-street names – a blend that’s the envy of many other town centres. Where so many other towns all look the same, Penrith stands out, and I believe that’s what keeps visitors coming back. I’m the general manager at The George Hotel in the centre of town, and the interesting thing about being in the hotel business is that you get to see your area from the visitor’s point of view. Our guests often remark on the warm and welcoming atmosphere in the town and how full of character it is. Hopefully that’s what Discover Penrith brings to life.
Our challenge now is to spread the word about Discover Penrith, and it will be at the heart of our marketing of Penrith locally, nationally and internationally in the coming months and years. Wherever you are in the world, you can even help us get the ball rolling by linking to Discover Penrith from your social media channels or website. We’re also keen to hear what you think of the site. You can get in touch using our contact form.
Lastly, it goes without saying that a lot of people have helped us create Discover Penrith and we’re very grateful for everyone’s contributions. I’d like to say a special thank you to our designer, Jili Allen, who also created the town’s new ‘Penrith: Heart of Cumbria’ branding, and to our web developers at Oppo-sites.
Meanwhile, Discover Penrith will have done its job if it encourages you to now come and discover Penrith for yourself. You’ll be most welcome.
