Tattie Tim | Purveyor of Potato Perfection

Taking the humble spud and creating the perfect lunchtime feast.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you an extraordinary tale to warm your cockles.  When you choose a Jacket Potato for your lunchtime vittles did you know, fine fellows, that you are taking part in a British tradition?  Buying a Jacket Potato from a street seller has been part of our esteemed culture in good old Blighty for nearly 2 centuries!!  Yes the original sellers plied their trade in the streets of The Big Smoke from the 1830’s and by the 1840’s they were a regular sight in that their Capital City, with the most successful Potato Man basing his cart at Smithfield, that well-known home of the good bit of grub.

Back in the day, Jacket Spuds were only available in Autumn and Winter! However you, dear friends, can treat yourselves to this delicacy whenever the mood takes you. With our very own renown Purveyor of the Perfect Potato, Tattie Tim, one of only a small handful of authentic Hot Potato street sellers in the world - and the only one in Cumbria! He can be found continuing this British tradition on his patch in the middle of town (which be the corner of Devonshire Street and Market Square) at lunchtime come rain or shine Monday to Satday throughout the year.

Tim’s magnificent authentic potato oven creates the perfect baked spud, ready to be topped with your choice of a range of homemade toppings. If you need inspiration, why not take a look at his Facebook page for the daily special. Or maybe you could be the “Spud of the day” and get to tip “Tattie Tim’s Top Hat” on his Instagram page! I do believe you can’t go wrong with the perennial favourite of cheese and beans though – but which do you prefer on top – beans then cheese, or cheese then beans?!  The choice, dear reader, is yours. It’s said that a trip to Penrith is not complete unless you’ve been to visit Tattie Tim’s salubrious stall.

In business since 1996, Tim is a Master of his trade and his Spuds are ‘bang tidy!’  Righto, best go and partake in his excellent wares.
