Location: Rheged Centre

In this half-day workshop, you will learn about the techniques and equipment that will help you enhance any item in your home. It is suitable for those with little or no experience of gilding. This workshop is an enjoyable introduction to the technique of contemporary gilding using Dutch Gold leaf and acrylic size (adhesive).
During this creative class, you will gain:
• An understanding of the difference between pure leaf gold and Dutch gold, and the differences between loose leaf and transfer leaf
• A knowledge of the tools and equipment used in Contemporary Gilding and how to use them correctly
• The correct procedure for preparing a surface to be gilded
• How to apply the size (adhesive) in the correct manner
• How to handle Dutch Gold
• Develop the artistic technique of applying the Dutch Gold
In the workshop, you will have the opportunity to gild a picture frame, and a fresh flower which you can take home. There is the option to gild an ornamental object if time allows. Contemporary gilding methods can quite literally be used to gild anything in the home from a decorative rail to a vase or old clock, the only limit is your imagination.
Amelia has a Bachelor’s and Master's Degree in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Lincoln. She is a gilt frame, objects and decorative surfaces conservator and restorer and has worked in the Fine Arts sector for over 4 years gaining extensive experience in restoring and conserving antiques. She currently conserves frames for the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne and Carlisle Cathedral.
