The Settle and Carlisle Railway was constructed 30 years after the Lancaster and Carlisle. John Crossley used large engineering works, tunnels, viaducts and embankments of some considerable scale to provide better gradients for his fast main line.
But how were they constructed and who were the engineers and contractors that were responsible for building the railway?
Find out the men behind the names and where they learnt their trade and acquired their expertise.
